Amazon’s 30-Minute Grocery Play: The Next Fast Lane in UK Quick Commerce

Amazon Expands Its Ultra-Fast Grocery Network

Amazon is expanding its ultra-fast Amazon Now service beyond London to major cities such as Manchester and Birmingham, using a network of micro-fulfilment centres to deliver groceries and household essentials in around 30 minutes. At the same time, it is adding fresh produce fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, bread and frozen, into its same-day offer in parts of London, letting customers add perishables to the same basket as millions of non-grocery items.

This push reflects Amazon’s ambition to build a more robust online grocery platform after retreating from standalone physical grocery formats. It also deepens Prime’s value proposition by bundling ultra-fast and same-day grocery into an existing subscription, increasing frequency and basket size in a category shoppers buy weekly.

Why Consumers Are Embracing Quick Commerce

For consumers, the proposition is speed, convenience and consolidation. Shoppers in eligible postcodes can place a single order for everything from headphones to bananas in the morning and receive it within hours, with Prime members getting free same-day delivery on an over £20 basket. This reduces the need for emergency store trips and allows flexible, just-in-time shopping of fresh items without a full weekly shop.

What This Means for Brands and Retail Media

For food and beverage brands, Amazon’s move elevates grocery visibility on a platform already optimised for search and media, creating more occasions for sponsored placements, retail media and impulse discovery around “tonight” or “last-minute” missions. It also raises the bar on availability, data sharing and operational performance as brands compete to win in fast, small-basket missions where substitution and out-of-stock risk are highly visible.

The Future of UK Quick Commerce

Quick commerce is embedded in our shopping behaviour. Sales are expected to more than double to over £17bn by early next decade as online, ultra-fast and same-day formats mature. Within that, grocery and top-up items are the engine of growth, fuelled by urban consumers who expect delivery in under an hour.

Amazon’s expansion intensifies pressure on supermarket quick-commerce tie-ups and pure-play apps, as Amazon’s integrated model combines marketplace assortment, Prime economics and micro-fulfilment speed. Grocers and q-commerce players will likely respond with sharper delivery propositions, more aggressive retail media offerings, and deeper partnerships with brands to defend share in same-day and 30-minute baskets.
