Amazon’s New “Join the Chat” Feature Signals the Next Phase of Conversational Commerce

9 May 2026

Amazon is continuing to lean into conversational commerce with the launch of its new Join the chat feature, an AI-powered experience that allows shoppers to ask questions about products and receive real-time audio responses.

Sitting within the broader Hear the highlights functionality, the feature brings together product details, reviews and contextual insights into a dialogue that feels closer to speaking with an in-store expert than browsing a product detail page.

Rather than scanning bullet points or trawling through reviews, customers can now ask questions, for example whether a coffee machine is beginner-friendly or how a fabric feels based on reviews, and receive tailored, non-repetitive answers that adapt as the conversation evolves.

A Shift Toward Voice-Led Shopping

What’s particularly interesting here is not just the technology itself, but the behavioural shift Amazon is responding to.

We’re seeing a clear move, especially among younger audiences, toward more conversational and voice-led interactions, whether that’s voice notes, chat-based search or AI assistants.

Amazon is effectively reformatting the shopping journey to match that expectation, reducing friction and time to decision by translating lengthy product information into something more digestible and human.

What This Means for Brands

For brands, this is another reminder to ensure their Amazon content is Rufus and AI-agent ready.

Traditional keyword-heavy listings and static content are being replaced by a model where context, clarity and completeness of information become critical.

If AI is synthesising answers on behalf of the shopper, then the quality and structure of your content directly influence how your product is represented in these conversations. Reviews, too, take on even greater importance as they are actively mined for qualitative insights.

The Bigger Picture

Our view is that this is less about novelty and more about Amazon future-proofing its interface.

By blending search, discovery and decision-making into a single conversational layer, Amazon is moving closer to owning the entire consideration journey.

Whether it lands at scale will depend on adoption, but the direction of travel is clear: the PDP as we know it is becoming increasingly invisible, replaced by an interface that talks back.
