Prime Day 2026: AI Shopping Agents Converted Better

By Paul Adams – Chief Growth Officer

Adobe reports that traffic originating from AI assistants to U.S. retail sites grew 89% during the event, on top of a 235% year‑on‑year rise in the first five months of 2026. Crucially, those AI‑referred visits converted 40% better than visits from search, email, or social media, reversing last year’s pattern when AI traffic converted 23% worse. This suggests agents like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are now delivering more targeted and thoughtful recommendations that push shoppers over the line rather than just inspiring browsing.

This conversion performance indicates that when consumers started their Prime Day journey with a conversational brief in tools like ChatGPT, describing needs, constraints, and preferences, they were far more likely to buy than visitors arriving on a single product page via generic search or ad clicks. These AI journeys trimmed the decision set, framed options simply, and removed much of the friction that usually kills intent in the comparison stage.

Amazon’s native assistants amplified this pattern. Shoppers who engaged with Alexa and on‑site AI features showed double‑digit percentage lifts in conversion versus non‑AI journeys, driven by personalised deals, smarter cross‑sell bundles, and streamlined re‑orders. The assistant effectively turned browsing into guided selection.

This indicate that the most valuable Prime Day customer is increasingly one whose decisions are mediated by AI systems upstream from the retailer’s search box. As these assistants gain share, high‑stakes events will be shaped less by “who wins the grid” and more by “who wins the recommendation inside the AI conversation.” Traffic volumes from AI agents is still very small less than 1% of traffic overall and only about 0.4% on Amazon. Whilst the samples are small, it is time for brands to experiment, optimise and collect data. If you can capture a large share of this traffic now for you category, you will be the first to benefit as it scales.
